Genovese Italian Restaurant is nestled in the downtown historic district of Lawrence, Kansas. With an intimate interior, attentive staff and fresh pasta made daily on the menu…what more could you ask for?
The building itself is enough to entice any local historian to visit the space. Opening in 1868 as J. Asman Grocery, this landmark has functioned as a storefront, laundry space, liquor store, millinery and flower shop. Starting in 1973 it was home to Mass Street Deli until Genovese revamped the space opening as a high end Italian eatery in 2007. With a rustic Italian feel the interior allows for an abundance of natural light and comfortable space to reconnect with friends and family.
The menu boasts Northern Italian cuisine made with local ingredients like grass fed beef from Kansas and fresh produce from the local Lawrence farmer’s market. Specialty items are handpicked by the chef and prepared nightly such as lamb shank served over mascarpone and fresh scallops on a bed of risotto au gratin. Genovese also host monthly dinners that feature a specific wine vendor and pair tastings alongside a four-course Italian feast. Fill your belly with yummy food and expand your wine palate at the same time!
Before you go, be sure to check out their Facebook page where nightly menu and drink specials are posted. They have an extensive and unique cocktail selection and to-die-for martinis. Stop in on Wednesday to enjoy $5.00 select cocktails or Thursdays for $5.00 martini night. Thatcher’s Cucumber and Blood Orange Organic Artisan Liqueur is behind their bar and used in many of their signature beverages. Genovese’s focus on high quality Italian cuisine, friendly staff and tasty drinks are just a few reasons why you should stop in for a cozy (and delicious!) experience.
