Our world is diverse and breathtaking, with countless climates, organisms, and ecosystems. But our world is also sensitive and shatterable, a system under immense pressure due to climate change. Our team takes sustainable sipping seriously, which is why we’re so diligent about sourcing all-natural, sustainably-farmed ingredients to craft our spirits and liqueurs. We know you share that passion! In honor of World Environment Day, enjoy these nature-inspired cocktails that pair perfectly with earth’s five major biomes. Not sure what a biome is? Check out this article from National Geographic.
Cheers to you, our planet, and to One Mother Nature of a Cocktail.
Biome #1: Aquatic
Sustainability isn’t just about dry land, about protecting our forests, our prairies, our mountain ranges… It’s also about protecting our water, earth’s largest biome. ¾ of the earth’s surface is covered in water, providing critical nutrients and other benefits to all human, plant, and animal life. This cocktail honors the essential nature of water… and its shades of blue.
Aqua Velva
1.25 oz Thatcher’s Organic Small Batch Vodka
1.25 oz Coppercraft Gin
.75 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
Top with lemon lime soda
Full recipe and instructions here.
Biome #2: Grassland
The sweeping grassland biome is captivating in its expanse. It sustains the lives of our biggest land mammals, including the elephant and the giraffe. But with rainfall rapidly decreasing and plant life promptly dying, grasslands need our help. This cocktail celebrates the rich nature of rolling terrains, covered with grasses, flowers, and herbs.
Spritz Plains
1 oz Thatcher’s Organic Small Batch Vodka
1 oz grapefruit juice
.75 oz Aperol
.25 oz Thatcher’s Organic Elderflower Liqueur
.25 oz simple syrup
Prosecco, to top
Lemon, to garnish
Full recipe and instructions here.
Biome #3: Forest
Our home state — Michigan — is filled with magical and majestic forests, teeming with plant and animal life and providing a space for shared recreation. But forests are also at risk due to rapid (though slowing) deforestation, pollution, and key species extinction. This cocktail recognizes our sprawling trees and shady shelters.
Norwegian Forest
(makes two cocktails)
.5 cup Thatcher’s Organic Small Batch Vodka
.5 cup simple syrup
Juice of ½ of a lime
Ginger ale
6 raspberries
10 blueberries
4 blackberries
2 sprigs of rosemary
4 lime wedges
ice
Full recipe and instructions here.
Biome #4: Desert
Though this biome seems barren and somewhat deadly, it’s laced with intricate life that thrives despite the conditions and the climate. Succulents survive with levels of water efficiency that put human systems to shame. Desert animals — like camels and snakes — are well-equipped to roam despite minimal resources. This cocktail honors the beauty and the blooms of the desert.
Cranberry Cactus
1 oz Thatcher’s Organic Prickly Pear Liqueur
1 oz Thatcher’s Organic Small Batch Vodka
1 oz cranberry juice
Full recipe and instructions here.
Biome #5: Tundra
The tundra is almost inhabitable, found in the Arctic and atop mountain ranges. The climate is cold and windy and rainfall is rare. But some plants and animals thrive in this terrain, despite its short season of growth and reproduction. This cocktail honors the key role the tundra plays in our global biodiversity.
Frozen Tundra
1.5 oz Thatcher’s Organic Small Batch Vodka
.5 oz simple syrup
.75 oz lime juice
1 dash angostura bitters
1 dash ginger beer
5 white grapes
